The United Kingdom medical health regulatory agency (MHRA) issued a Medical Device Alert on May 25, 2010, advising all surgeons that the National Joint Registry for England and Wales had reported that DePuy ASR acetabular cups were experiencing higher than expected rates of surgical revision. Although the Alert did not identify the reason for the revisions, it has been reported that patients with DePuy ASR implants have experienced inflammation and pain as a result of metal debris in the hip socket as well as the development of pseudo-tumors in tissue near the implant.
