Recommendations
Since the revision rates for the DePuy ASR hip replacement device are uncharacteristically high, there are certain recommendations that recipients should take note of.
First, patients should meet with their doctor yearly, for at least five years after the original implant, to see if their device is functioning properly. Patients should have an MRI or x-rays done to see if the implant is positioned correctly and if there are any signs of metallosis, loosening of the device or pseudotumors. Blood tests should also be conducted in order to test the level of chromium and cobalt in the blood stream. Because the DePuy ASR is a metal-on-metal implant made of cobalt-chromium, a lot of metal debris is shed into the body. High metal ion concentration level can be toxic to patient, and a high level also leads to inflammatory reactions because the immune system is too overwhelmed to get rid of so many foreign particles.
If these tests show problems with the DePuy ASR hip replacement device, doctors will usually recommend a revision surgery for the patient. The patient would have another surgery to have the ASR removed and have a new hip implant inserted.
If you have been suffering pain and have had a revision surgery, you may be entitled to recover damages for medical costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Although DePuy is offering some reimbursements for out of pocket expenses and lost wages, you may be entitled to more. Find out more about what your legal rights are.
